Jang Yiโs The Uncanny Counter (๊ฒฝ์ด๋ก์ด ์๋ฌธ) is a fantasy webtoon that opened with a teaser on Kakao Webtoon, then Daum Webtoon, on August 16, 2018 and ended with the final episode of its third season on April 4, 2024. The series calls the people who hunt evil spirits, the ones who slip out of the afterlife to live forever on earth, โCounters.โ By day the Counters work at a noodle shop; by night they track down spirits. The story begins when one Counter dies and an ordinary high school student, So Mun, is chosen to take his place. It is a superhero story whose home base is a neighborhood noodle shop, and that is its charm.
The serialization comes in four blocks. Season one ran from August 2018 to October 2019 and season two from April 2020 to June 2021. On December 29, 2022 a prequel, season zero, went up first, telling the origin of Choi Jang-mul, the very first Counter; a prequel is a side story set before the main one. Season three started on March 30, 2023 and reached its last episode on April 4, 2024. On Kakao Webtoon the series counts 186 entries including teasers, and as of August 2026 it has passed 200 million cumulative views. When Kakao Entertainment announced season three, it promised a now twenty-year-old So Mun and the arrival of the final villain.
What made the webtoon a household name was the sixteen-episode drama that aired on OCN from November 28, 2020 to January 24, 2021. Jo Byeong-gyu played So Mun, Yoo Jun-sang played Ga Mo-tak, Kim Se-jeong played Do Ha-na, and Yeom Hye-ran played Chu Mae-ok. Nationwide ratings started at 2.702% for the first episode and climbed to 10.999% for the finale, the highest an OCN drama had ever recorded, and the show also streamed on Netflix. Yeom Hye-ran won Best Supporting Actress in television at the 2021 Baeksang Arts Awards for the role. The second season, The Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch, aired on tvN as twelve episodes from July 29 to September 3, 2023, with the finale at 6.065%.
Plenty of viewers are waiting for a third drama season, but as of August 2026 there has been no announcement that one is in production or scheduled. Yeom Hye-ran did sign off from the season two shoot with โsee you in season three,โ yet neither the network nor the production company has said anything official. The source material, on the other hand, is finished. The webtoonโs third season kept running for more than half a year after the dramaโs second season ended and reached its conclusion in April 2024, and Jang Yi launched a new baseball webtoon, Rhythm & Baseball, on Kakao Webtoon on January 27, 2025. The ending the drama never reached can now be read from start to finish in one go.
