The lead of the Tomb Raider King TV anime, which Fuji TV airs every Wednesday at 25:15, is Ryoga Goriki. Anyone who read the webtoon on KakaoPage knows him as Jooheon Suh. The Japanese official site introduces him as a fearless young man who raids tombs for relics for a living, and Yoshimasa Hosoya voices him. It is a Korean anime made by STUDIO EEK, but in Japan it airs as a Japanese dub that gives the characters Japanese names.
The story follows the setup of the original webtoon. One day mysterious tombs appear all over the world, and whoever gets hold of a relic inside one gains special powers. Tomb raider Jooheon Suh is betrayed by his employer and, just before he dies inside a tomb, goes back fifteen years, to a time when no tombs or relics had appeared yet. According to the anime's official introduction, what saves him is a crow relic that suddenly speaks to him. Knowing what is coming, he conquers tombs, gathers relics and vows revenge.
The original is a web novel SAN.G serialized from 2016 to 2018. The webtoon, drawn by 3B2S and adapted by Yuns (REDICE STUDIO), was released on KakaoPage from 2019 to 2023. On 7 July, Kakao Entertainment said the web novel had passed 120 million cumulative views in Korea and the webtoon more than 500 million views in Korea and abroad combined.
The anime was produced by STUDIO EEK, the studio behind Leafie, A Hen into the Wild and The Haunted House series. Laftel released episodes 1 and 2 for free ahead of the broadcast at 5:30pm KST on 13 June, and the Korean broadcast began on ANIPLUS at 2:30am on 9 July. Kakao Entertainment said the series would then roll out on Netflix and Laftel as well. The opening theme SHOW DOWN and the ending theme To Be Continued are both performed by the band QWER.
In Japan, Kansai TV, Tokai TV, BS Fuji and Hokkaido Cultural Broadcasting air it in turn after Fuji TV, and ABEMA streams it first, at the same time as Fuji TV. The Japanese dub stars Yoshimasa Hosoya alongside Saori Hayami, Miyu Irino, Junichi Suwabe, Nobuhiko Okamoto and Yuko Kaida. The Blu-ray box released in Japan on 28 October collects episodes 1 to 12.
The story after the original also arrived this summer. The sequel, Tomb Raider King: END LINE, started on KakaoPage on 5 July as a webtoon and on 6 July as a web novel, with SAN.G, 3B2S and Yuns all returning. It follows Jooheon Suh, who saved the world and became the king of relics, as an incident around his daughter from the future brings him face to face with himself from another world line.
