The live-action film is the version of this story that traveled furthest and landed hardest. Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy opened in South Korea on July 23, 2025, directed by Kim Byung-woo, running 117 minutes, distributed by Lotte Entertainment. Ahn Hyo-seop played Kim Dok-ja, Lee Min-ho played Yoo Joong-hyuk, and the cast also included Chae Soo-bin as Yoo Sang-ah, Nana as Jung Hee-won, Jisoo as Lee Ji-hye, Shin Seung-ho as Lee Hyun-sung, and Kwon Eun-seong as Lee Gil-young. Its break-even point had been reported before release at six million admissions. By August 5, 2025, Korean reports put the cumulative total just past one million.

The book it came from is far larger than two hours. Kim Dok-ja is an ordinary office worker and the only person who has read Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse, a web novel that ran for more than a decade to almost no audience. On the day he finishes the last chapter, the novel becomes the world, and he is the one person alive who knows what happens next. singNsong serialized the novel on Munpia from January 6, 2018 to February 2, 2020 across 551 chapters, with side stories starting February 15, 2023. The webtoon adaptation launched on Naver Webtoon on May 26, 2020, written by UMI, drawn by Sleepy-C of Redice Studio, with original character designs by Geomnem.

The webtoon did something unusual for an adaptation: it pulled the source material up with it. In a release dated May 26, 2021, Naver reported that the webtoon was running in nine languages with 360 million cumulative global views, and that the novel had passed 10 billion won in cumulative transactions, having overtaken its own previous two years of sales within two months of the webtoonโ€™s launch. As of August 2026 the English WEBTOON page lists 4.5 million subscribers and 591 million views, and the series has passed 300 episodes. New episodes have stopped, though. Both the English and traditional Chinese editions show June 2026 as their latest chapter, the Chinese page carries a hiatus notice, and no return date has been posted.

The anime is still a waiting game. Aniplex and Crunchyroll announced a television series at Anime Expo in Los Angeles in July 2024, along with plans for Crunchyroll to stream it across North and South America, Europe, Oceania and other territories. As of August 2026 no studio, director, cast, or premiere window has been revealed, and the 2027 dates circulating online are not official. In print the webtoon had reached 18 collected volumes by March 2026, with the English editions published by IZE Press, an imprint of Yen Press.

You can read the webtoon in Korean on Naver Webtoon and in English on WEBTOON, and Yen Press handles the print volumes. If the film was your entry point, start from episode one rather than looking for where the movie left off. The first scenario the film compresses into its opening act runs for dozens of episodes here, and that space is what makes Dok-jaโ€™s decisions legible. A hiatus is an awkward time to catch up to a series, but a good time to start one. (As of August 21, 2026)
