The earth of the far future is covered in thick cloud, and the sun no longer reaches the ground. Plants have withered and oxygen is thin. Humankind's answer is a technology that turns a person into a plant, and a person who has become one produces a small amount of oxygen. The Japanese original calls the procedure ่ปข่ฑ; VIZ's translation calls it transfloration.
Toshiro Kamiya is at the end of his rope. His mother is ill, and his job barely covers her medication, let alone food. So he seriously considers giving up his body for the payment that transfloration brings. VIZ's blurb puts the choice in front of him plainly: save his family or save himself.
The story follows Toshiro from the procedure through the days until he finally becomes what the series calls spiriflora, the plant a transflorated person ends up as. At the national transfloration institute there is a section that belongs to no department, known simply as the Nashi section. Its chief, Jin Hiragishi, learns that Toshiro can hear the voices of the spiriflora and hires him as a special temporary employee.
Kasumi Yasuda was born in Hyogo. After being selected for the 76th Shogakukan New Comic Award in the seinen category, Yasuda started a first serialisation in a manga app with Denpa Seinen; Fool Night is the breakout series. Serialisation in Big Comic Superior began in 2020, and volume 13 came out in Japan on 30 June 2026. The manga won best suspense at the 2023 Japan Expo Awards and was nominated at the Angoulรชme International Comics Festival. Shogakukan's page for the series carries a recommendation from Shuzo Oshimi of The Flowers of Evil, who writes that he is jealous of the drawing.
The anime goes out worldwide on Netflix on 26 November, every episode on the same day. It is the first joint production of Sunrise, the studio behind Gundam, and Shaft of the Monogatari series, and Koki Uchiyama voices Toshiro. On 21 August a second teaser and three more cast members were announced: Junya Enoki, Aya Endo and Kiyomitsu Mizuuchi.
VIZ Media's English volume 10 came out on 15 September. In it Yomiko Hourai, on orders from Dr. Kudai, heads to a Buddhist temple to find the researcher who transflorated Toshiro. In Korea, Somy Media published volume 1 on 17 April 2024 under the title ํ ๋์ดํธ.
