On 18 September, Fuji TV released the main promotional video and opening theme for the TV anime Firefly Wedding. The opening theme is "Period", a new song written by iri. This is the first time iri has contributed a song to an anime. The video opens with two people whose paths would otherwise never have crossed meeting as if drawn together by fate. It then shows Shinpei openly declaring his feelings to Satoko: "My love can be a little intense, but I'll make you happy." The premiere airs at 11:30 p.m. on Friday 9 October on Fuji TV's noitaminA block.
The story is set in the Meiji era, at the height of Japan's period of Westernization. Satoko Kirigaya, a count's daughter, was born into a distinguished family and blessed with beauty, but lives knowing she has been told she has little time left. Her dream is to marry into a distinguished family and make her father proud. Then one night, Satoko is abducted as part of someone's scheme. With her life at stake, she finds herself in the presence of the hitman Shinpei Gotou and tells him a lie on the spot. "Let's get married. If you're with me, you can have everything." Shinpei calls Satoko his destined partner and begins showering her with obsessive love. Satoko wavers between the duty she bears and her feelings for Shinpei.
The original manga's creator, Oreco Tachibana, also drew Promise Cinderella and created the original character designs for the TV anime The After-Dinner Mysteries. Firefly Wedding began serialization in January 2023 on Shogakukan's manga app Manga One. According to Fuji TV's announcement, it won the grand prize at the Electronic Comic Awards 2024, placed first in the Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics 2024, and ranked third in the Manga We Want to See Animated Ranking 2025. Its total circulation stood at 3.5 million copies when the anime adaptation was announced in January this year, but had risen to five million in the 18 September announcement.
The animation is produced by david production, known for the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series and Cells at Work! The director is Takahiro Kamei, who worked on Urusei Yatsura and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, while character design is handled by Yukiko Aikei of Your Lie in April. Yuko Kakihara of The Apothecary Diaries handles series composition and scripts, with music by NOGRID. Lynn voices Satoko, and Kouki Uchiyama voices Shinpei. Kento Itou voices Kotaro Ogawa, Satoko's childhood friend and bodyguard, while Kenjiro Tsuda voices Mitsueda, a yakuza on Tennyo Island who was hired by someone to abduct Satoko.
The second teaser video, released in August, reveals a little more about where the story is heading. Shinpei takes Satoko to Tennyo Island, a secret island cut off from the outside world. Satoko, who comes to live as a courtesan in order to escape the island safely, confides a painful truth to Shinpei, who says, "It's my job to protect Satoko." The video features the ending theme "Yumegokochi", newly written by TOOBOE.
In Japan, the anime airs on Fuji TV's noitaminA block every Friday at 11:30 p.m. starting 9 October, and on AT-X every Friday at 11 p.m. starting 16 October. The official website says it will also become available in turn on services in Japan including Netflix, U-NEXT and ABEMA, beginning at midnight on 9 October. The Korean edition is published by Seoul Media Comics under the title ๋ฐ๋ง๋ถ์ด์ ํผ๋ก, and 11 ebook volumes and the serialized edition are available on RIDI. VIZ Media publishes the English edition as Firefly Wedding.
