RuriDragon stopped for a year and seven months, and now Kyoto Animation is making the anime

RuriDragon began in issue 28 of Weekly Shonen Jump in June 2022 and stopped two months later, in August, because Masaoki Shindo's health had given out. It came back in issue 14, on sale 4 March 2024. ORICON News put the gap at about a year and seven months.

The return changed how the series is published. Chapters 7 to 11 ran weekly in the print magazine. From chapter 12 on 22 April 2024 it moved to the digital edition of Weekly Shonen Jump and to Shonen Jump+, appearing every other issue. The official Japanese page marks it as a digital-edition serial right next to the title.

The story starts on an ordinary morning. Ruri Aoki, a high school student, wakes up with horns on her head, and her mother suggests it might be hereditary, since her father is a dragon. Ruri goes to school anyway. Her classmates are fascinated by the horns, and then a second dragon trait shows itself. The Japanese official page describes the series as a dragon girl who does not try very hard, then does, then does not again.

It started as a one-shot. VIZ Media's series page says RuriDragon first appeared as a one-shot in 2020, and the Japanese site adds that the one-shot ran in the Jump GIGA special issue and that its voice comic was watched more than two million times on YouTube before the serial was greenlit.

Japanese volumes reached number 5 on 4 March 2026. In it Ruri develops an ice ability right after the sports festival and starts asking what kind of dragon her father is. VIZ Media published volume 4 in English on 1 September: Ruri hurries a typhoon along to save the sports festival, lands on the event committee, and then literally catches fire. Korean readers get it from Seoul Media Comics as 루리 드래곤.

Kyoto Animation was announced as the studio for the TV anime at the end of 2025, with no broadcast window given. In the comment released with the announcement, Shindo named Hyouka as his favourite Kyoto Animation work, and specifically the culture festival arc told from several viewpoints, where Oreki minding the club's stall is the part he enjoys most, even though the character is only sitting there.
