Midori Saejima is a first-year at a private high school that has only just opened, which means every student in the building is a first-year. When the summer holiday ends, the school's first student council election is waiting. Midori becomes vice president. The president is Akira Sudo, the boy she has quietly liked since she saw him rescue an abandoned cat, and he already has a girlfriend.
Ai Yazawa drew the series for Shueisha's Ribon from the September 1991 issue to the November 1994 issue, and the tankobon run is eight volumes. A four-volume complete edition and a six-volume bunko edition followed, and a five-volume re-edited edition began on 25 June 2019. Oricon News reported in May 2019 that the eight volumes had passed ten million copies in circulation.
The council is not just a backdrop for school festivals. Friends such as Yuko Mamiya, who joins the council with her, and Ken Nakagawa, Midori's friend from middle school, pull the story out of the council room. VIZ's synopsis for volume 3 has Midori, after breaking up with Akira, dating Ken and asking herself whether she has really put Akira behind her.
VIZ Media publishes the English edition under its Shojo Beat imprint in thick volumes of around 400 pages each. Volume 1 came out on 2 June 2026, volume 2 on 1 September, and volume 3 is scheduled for 1 December. The blurb for volume 2 says Midori is enjoying school life to the fullest with her student council friends, except for her love life with Akira, which is not going well.
The only animated version is an OVA released on VHS on 21 September 1994, directed by Hiroko Tokita, with Aya Hisakawa as Midori and Toshiyuki Morikawa as Akira. VIZ's author bio leads with NANA, but NANA began in 1999, five years after this series ended. For Ribon readers in the early nineties, this was the Yazawa title.
In Korea, Seoul Media Comics publishes it as ์ฒ์ฌ๊ฐ ์๋์ผ. In Japan the series is on Shueisha's Manga Mee app and on Ribon's official site, Rimacomi+.
