Ai Yasumi is a first-year high schooler living on ไผ่ฑ็ๅณถ, an island that belongs to Tokyo. Reading manga is what she loves most, until something happens that sets her thinking about making it herself. Before long she and the members of her school's manga club are preparing work for Comitia, the fair in Tokyo where people sell their own original comics. The series' own introduction calls it a manga about manga.
Minoru Toyoda was born on Izu ลshima in 1971. He made his debut in 2002 with Love Roma in Monthly Afternoon, and in 2011 moved his work to Shogakukan's Gessan. Draw This, Then Die! is still running there, with ten volumes out in Japan; volume 10 went on sale on 10 July 2026. The series won the Manga Taisho 2023 grand prize and the 70th Shogakukan Manga Award.
The TV anime began on Friday 3 July 2026. It airs in the Nippon TV network's Fra-Ani slot at 23:30 on Fridays across 30 stations nationwide, and AT-X has shown it on Fridays at 22:30 since 10 July. Shin-Ei Animation produces it, with Hiroaki Akagi directing, Hiroko Fukuda on series composition and Hiroaki Tsutsumi on music. Akira Sekine voices Ai, and Saori Hayami plays Rei Teshima, the teacher who advises the manga club. Inori Minase plays Hikaru Sekiryuu and Noriko Hidaka plays Pokota.
The opening theme is "Isho" by Tatsuya Kitani and the ending theme is "Conifer" by Regal Lily. In a comment on the official site, Toyoda recalls that at his first meeting with the production team he asked them, before anything else, to put the beauty of the island first. The director writes that he went to Izu ลshima, the model for the island in the story, to research it, and that its town, harbour and mountains were a great help in building the look of the show.
Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the manga in English under the title Draw This, Then Die! In Japan the anime streams on U-NEXT, Anime Hodai, Lemino and other services.
