Tonight, at the film festival's outdoor theatre, a thirty-year-old film will screen with barrier-free captions for the first time. Every line of dialogue and every audible sound has to go into the captions, and after 1,200 of them, one is left. Under the last nine seconds, where a daughter sits with her back against the wall of an empty house, something is buried. The restoration engineer passes on the director's one condition: not a single frame of those nine seconds is to be touched. The caption file locks at six.
