In the first chapter Yoshiki says it out loud: you are not Hikaru. The boy sitting across from him agrees without arguing. The real Hikaru went into the mountains and never came back, and whatever took his place is using his face and his memories.
An ordinary horror story would start the exorcism here. This one goes the other way. Yoshiki knows exactly what he is talking to and cannot bring himself to end the friendship. Something fake beside him beats nothing at all, and he cannot explain that to himself either. The weight of the story sits on that decision rather than on the monster.
The setting is a small village ringed by mountains, with old beliefs and old prohibitions still in force and a population used to people going missing. Fear therefore comes from two directions. The thing in Hikaruโs chair is frightening; the adults who notice and quietly let it pass are worse.

CygamesPictures animated the first season, twelve episodes from 6 July 2025, with Netflix distributing outside Japan. The open space and the silent panels were the hard part to adapt, and the production chose to leave the frame empty rather than fill it.
People call it a good summer read, which is almost backwards. It is the kind of book that makes cicadas, paddy paths and bright afternoon light feel wrong.
