Sui Ishida serialised Tokyo Ghoul and its sequel Tokyo Ghoul:re in Weekly Young Jump from 2011 to 2018. Born in Fukuoka, he had already taken second place in the magazine's 113th Grand Prix in 2010 with a Tokyo Ghoul one-shot. Chapter 1 of Choujin X appeared on Shueisha's web manga site Tonari no Young Jump on 10 May 2021, and the series is still running there.
Tokio Kurohara and Azuma Higashi do everything together. Azuma has the family, the grades and the athletic ability; Tokio, ordinary and not especially strong, mostly stumbles along behind him. One night the two are attacked by a superhuman mutant called a choujin, and the attack leaves Tokio a choujin as well.
Powers do not make his life simpler. Tokio has to hide the transformation from his family and dodge a truancy charge at school, while odd incidents keep piling up around town. VIZ sums the series up as dark humour and quirky horror united in one story.
Volume 16 went on sale in Japan on 18 June 2026. VIZ Media published volume 13 in English on 15 September under its VIZ Signature imprint. In it the Yamato Mori troops finally reach the upper level of the Tower of Mourning, and just as the mission is about to succeed Tokio declares that he wants to negotiate with Zora rather than eliminate her. After years of war between the factions, he has to win over his own comrades as well as Zora.
The English chapters are also on VIZ's Shonen Jump service and on MANGA Plus, and Daewon C.I. publishes the Korean edition. The Young Jump channel on YouTube marked the release of volume 9 with a promotional video voiced by Yuma Uchida.
