Above a sea of clouds, the sky islands are linked by floating stepping stones, and each bridge stands only until the name carved into the signpost at its head fades. In the first year after her teacher, who held the chisel for thirty years, has gone, she has carved eight names and stands before the last island. The official name in the ledger will not settle into the wood however many times she carves it, and meanwhile the stones drop into the clouds one by one. The great wind arrives at dawn tomorrow. Her teacher left her only one piece of advice: don't ask for the name, listen for it.
