The setting is eleventh-century northern Europe. The boy Thorfinn watches his father killed in front of him and then joins the band led by the killer, Askeladd. The arrangement is that he can have the manโs head if he wins a duel, which means he spends years on the same ships, fighting the same raids, beside the person he intends to kill.
That is book one. Severed limbs and burning villages, page after page, and by sixteen Thorfinn has learned nothing except revenge.
Book two turns the series around completely. Stripped of his goal, Thorfinn is sold into slavery and put to work clearing a field. Talking to Einar, who works beside him, he thinks about the people he killed for the first time. Whole volumes pass with almost no combat, and many readers name this stretch as the peak of the work. How a killer is supposed to keep living becomes the actual subject.
Makoto Yukimura started serialisation on 27 April 2005 and closed it in 2025, twenty years later. The final volume, number 29, was published on 22 September 2025. The series took the grand prize in the manga division of the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2009 and the general category of the 36th Kodansha Manga Award in 2012.
WIT Studio animated the first season, 24 episodes from 8 July 2019. It covers most of book one, which makes it a workable way to learn the world and the cast before opening the manga.
Vinland is what the Norse called the eastern coast of North America. The idea of reaching a land with no war and no slaves keeps returning in this story, and the person who first says it is not the person still carrying it at the end.
