Written by Kaiu Shirai and drawn by Posuka Demizu, The Promised Neverland began in Weekly Shonen Jump on 1 August 2016 and ended on 15 June 2020 at chapter 181, collected in 20 volumes. It opens at Grace Field House, an orphanage ringed by forest where the children are well fed, well taught, and tested every day.

Emma, Norman and Ray find out what those test scores are for, and where the children who get adopted actually go. From that point the story runs on information rather than strength. Who knows what, how much ignorance to keep performing, when the watcher steps away: those calculations do the work that fights would do elsewhere. The early volumes are dense enough that most readers report being unable to stop after the first.

Once the escape happens and the world outside opens up, the series changes character, and opinion divides at that seam. At 20 volumes the whole shape is available at once, and both animated and live-action adaptations exist.
