The Kindaichi Case Files, written by Yozaburo Kanari and drawn by Fumiya Sato, began in Weekly Shonen Magazine on 14 October 1992, and this first run ended on 22 October 1997 at chapter 219, collected in 27 volumes. Later series followed, but this is the run that fixed the format.
Hajime Kindaichi is an indifferent student who becomes someone else in front of a case. The settings are cut off from the outside world: an inn behind a snowed-in road, an island with no boat until morning, an old theatre where a troupe is staying. People die inside them in sequence. What gives the series its character is less the trick than the motive: the culprit’s reasons are laid out at length at the end, and they almost always reach back to something that happened in that same place years earlier.
Locked rooms, alibis and dying messages, the standard furniture of classical detective fiction, are transplanted directly onto the pages of a boys’ magazine, and the construction still reads clearly today.
