Kafka Hibino is thirty-two and works for a company that clears away kaiju corpses. He and a childhood friend once promised each other they would join the Defence Force. He kept failing the exam; she became captain of the Third Division. He watches her on the news while hosing down what she killed.
That arrangement sets the tone. Shonen protagonists are usually fifteen. Here the obstacle is not talent but age, because applications close at thirty-three. Kafka has exactly one attempt left.
Then a small unidentified kaiju climbs into his mouth, and his body starts switching between human and monster. The government labels the creature Kaiju No. 8, and Kafka, knowing it is him, sits the Defence Force exam anyway. He joins the organisation that would be obliged to kill him if it found out, which keeps two kinds of tension running at once.
Serialisation began on Shonen Jump+ on 3 July 2020 and closed with chapter 129 on 18 July 2025, five years later. The final volume, number 16, arrived on 4 September 2025, by which point circulation had passed 19 million copies. In 2021 the series was nominated for the 14th Manga Taisho and won the web manga category of the 7th Next Manga Award.
Production I.G animates it. Season one ran twelve episodes from 13 April 2024, season two began on 19 July 2025, and a compilation film of season one played in theatres on 28 March 2025 in between.
Sixteen volumes is short by the standards of a modern long-running action series. If you want something finished that you can read through in a weekend, the length works in its favour.
