This manga starts where most fantasy stops. Himmelโs party defeats the demon king, returns to the capital, accepts the celebration, and then the four of them go their separate ways. All of that happens in the opening pages of chapter one.
The complication is that one of the four is an elf. To Frieren, ten years is a short errand, so she agrees to meet again without thinking about it. Meanwhile the humans age. Himmel grows old and dies, and at his funeral Frieren realises she knows almost nothing about the man she travelled with for a decade. Her tears there are the engine of the whole series.
She sets out again, this time to understand people. Her apprentice Fern and the warrior Stark travel with her, and the destination is Aureole, where the souls of the dead are said to rest. There are fights, but the subject is time. Walking the same road eighty years later and finally asking the questions she skipped means flashbacks often matter more than the present-day scene.
Kanehito Yamada writes and Tsukasa Abe draws. Serialisation began in Weekly Shonen Sunday on 28 April 2020 and is still going. The awards came early: the Grand Prize at the 14th Manga Taisho, a nomination for the 25th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and third place at the 7th Next Manga Award.
Madhouse animates it. The first season ran 28 episodes from 29 September 2023, and the second aired from 16 January to 27 March 2026 in the Friday late-night slot on Nippon TV. A third season covering the Golden Land arc has been announced for October 2027.
If you cannot decide between the manga and the anime, the first episode follows chapters one and two almost panel for panel. Twenty minutes is enough to know whether the rest is for you.
