Makoto Shinkai holds five credited roles on Suzume: original creator, script, storyboard, image board, and colour director. The film was produced by CoMix Wave and released on 11 November 2022 as a single feature.
Suzume Iwato is seventeen. Her town, somewhere in Kyushu, is a quiet one. Then she crosses paths with Souta Munakata, a young man whose search has a single object: a door. The two of them find it in a ruined building in the mountains, and Suzume is the one who opens it. More doors follow, opening one after another around the country, and disaster is what comes through them.
Adventure, fantasy, mystery and the supernatural all run inside the same story. Closing the doors again pulls Suzume out of her town and across Japan, and the road keeps getting longer. What the film records along that road is less the size of the danger than the way Suzume comes loose from what has been holding her, and grows.
