The story hands its point of view to the person who did the damage. Shouya Ishida, who has the class behind him, starts bullying Shouko Nishimiya, a new transfer student who cannot hear.
The teasing does not stop, and the classroom eventually swings around and shuts Shouya out instead. Shouko moves to another school, and he grows up on the outside of everything, carrying what he did. Long afterwards he sets out to find her again. Naoka Ueno and Yuzuru Nishimiya appear alongside the two leads.
Kyoto Animation produced it. It runs as one feature, released on 17 September 2016. Nothing continues it, so the beginning and the end sit inside the same film. It is a drama and a romance, and much of it is plain everyday life. On the English track, Stephanie Sheh took ADR direction along with casting and recording, and Michael Sinterniklaas and Amanda Winn Lee are credited as assistant ADR directors.
