Shangri-La Frontier is a story about someone who loves games far too much. Rakuro Hizutome, a high school student, spends his time hunting down the games everyone else calls garbage and clearing them to the end. The worse the controls and the more broken the code, the happier he is. Then he logs into Shangri-La Frontier, a VR game famous for being genuinely well made, and the story starts.
The fun is watching instincts trained on garbage games meet a good one. Rakuro ignores the strategies everyone treats as obvious. He looks for gaps in the hit detection, finds movement the developers forgot to block, and wears a rabbit mask instead of armour. Then he charges alone at a unique monster that other players avoid entirely.
The way the rules get explained is unusually careful. A single skill is shown to be strong, and then shown to carry a price. That is why a VR game manga can leave you feeling like you just finished a session yourself. The original novel is by Katarina, and Ryosuke Fuji draws the manga.
Serialization began in Kodanshaโs Weekly Shonen Magazine in July 2020. Volume 27 was published on 16 July 2026.
The anime premiered in October 2023 from studio C2C and ran 25 episodes. The official site has announced a third season for January 2027 in the Sunday 5pm slot on the MBS and TBS network, with a teaser released alongside it.
In Korea the manga is licensed on Lezhin Comics, Naver Series and KakaoPage. All three carry the comic version, so it is the same story wherever you start.
