Rakugo is a Japanese storytelling art in which one performer sits on a cushion with a folding fan and plays every character in the story. There are no sets and no lighting cues; the performer switches roles with voice and the angle of the shoulders. This manga carries that world into the vocabulary of Weekly Shonen Jump.

It opens with a single examination. Akaneโ€™s father Shinta fails his shinโ€™uchi exam, the promotion to the top rank of rakugo performer, and is then expelled from his masterโ€™s house. He leaves the stage that day, and his daughter decides she will take the rank back for him.

The competition works differently from other shonen series. No fists, no ball. Two performers do the same classical story and the question is who does it how. The same script in two mouths becomes two different things, and the pages explaining that difference are this mangaโ€™s fight scenes. The terminology is unpacked as it appears, so no prior knowledge of rakugo is required.

Yuuki Suenaga writes and Takamasa Moue draws. Serialisation began in Weekly Shonen Jump on 14 February 2022 and continues. Recognition came quickly: second place at the 16th Manga Taisho, fourth in the menโ€™s list of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023, third among the comics recommended by bookshop staff nationwide in 2023, and a place on the New York Public Libraryโ€™s 2023 Best Books for Teens.

ZEXCS animated the first season, twelve episodes from 4 April 2026. With a subject made entirely of sound, there are passages where animation simply has the advantage, and hearing a performance instead of reading it is one of them.

If rakugo is new to you, read the first two volumes and watch episode one side by side. What happens to the same scene when it gains a voice becomes obvious immediately.
