Daemons of the Shadow Realm adapts a manga by Hiromu Arakawa, the author of Fullmetal Alchemist. It has run in Square Enixโs Gangan Online since 2021, and the anime started on 4 April 2026 in a two-cour block animated by bones, directed by Masahiro Ando.
In a remote mountain village watched over by two stone guardians, a boy named Yuru lives off the land. The only family he has left is his twin sister Asa, who carries out a mysterious duty on the villageโs behalf while kept in a cage. Why she is caged, and what the village is actually protecting, are the questions the opening episodes are built on.
The construction is sturdy in the way Arakawaโs work usually is. Supernatural pairings called tsugai drive the plot, but people still eat, work and bargain on the page, and humor sits comfortably next to violence in the same scene.
A version with the bloodier cuts intact exists alongside the broadcast edit, so where you watch changes the impression slightly. Netflix and Crunchyroll carry it internationally.
