Gainax and Tatsunoko Production put the first episode on air on 3 October 1995 and closed the run on 27 March 1996, twenty-six episodes in all. The setup is compact. Its year is 2015, its city is Tokyo, and the Angels have been there once before. NERV, an agency working under the United Nations, answers with the humanoid Evangelion, and the list of people who can pilot one is very short.
Six genres are listed against the title: action, drama, mecha, mystery, psychological and sci-fi. Mecha accounts for one of them.
Four names carry the show: Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Souryuu and Misato Katsuragi. Hiroshi Yamaguchi wrote episodes 16, 22 and 23, and Keiji Gotou worked on key animation for episode 9. English-speaking viewers have met the series through more than one recording: Amanda Winn Lee served as ADR director on the ADV dub, and Carolyn Keranen directed the Netflix version.
